Rediscovering the Magic of Music in Community Spaces

Mosaic MI - Experience the community in song!

There’s something kind of amazing that happens when someone shares a song they’ve written. It doesn’t have to be perfect. In fact, it’s often the imperfections—the nerves, the shaky voice, the breath they take before they begin—that makes the moment so human and so memorable.

That’s the heart of Mosaic MI, a songwriter-focused gathering I’ve been attending and falling in love with here on the Eastside of Seattle.

Now, let’s be clear: Mosaic isn’t just an open mic.

It’s also not a traditional songwriting circle.

It lives in the space between—something more intimate, more connected. It’s a listening space as much as a performance space. A place where musicians and non-musicians alike show up to be moved, to be present, and to support each other in the most generous way possible. You might even call it a witnessing space for people daring to be seen, heard, and artistic.

“Most of my journey—like most people’s—what I thought I wanted looked nothing like what I actually needed. But it’s been better.” Abby K, (Songwriter, Founder of Mosaic MI)

Come As You Are

You don’t need to be a performer to be part of the magic. One of the most beautiful aspects of Mosaic is how it honors the role of the listener. If you’ve ever sat in a room while someone shared a song from the edge of their courage, you know the gift of simply being there.

Mosaic is for the people who take the risk to share something vulnerable. And it’s equally for the people who come to bear witness.

“You don’t have to play to belong. Just being in the room can be the most powerful part.”

It reminds me of the power of Sangha experienced in meditation circles I’ve been a paper of —where the experience deepens not just because of what you bring, but because of what you absorb from the presence of others. That kind of shared experience isn’t just good for artists—it’s good for the soul.

What Happens at Mosaic

Expect more of a living-room vibe than a typical open mic night.

Mosaic MI June 2025

You’ll meet people at all stages of their songwriting journey—some seasoned performers, others just beginning to share their songs.

There’s laughter, a few nerves, and always a surprise or two.

It’s free to attend. There’s food (Abby’s a professional artisan baker!), warmth, and a kind of unspoken permission in the air—to try, to listen, to connect.

Whether you’re part of a songwriting community or just curious about how music brings people together, Mosaic is a place where it’s safe to show up as you are.

Sometimes you’ll hear something that sparks your own creativity.
Other times, you’ll simply leave feeling more human.

And honestly? That’s more than enough.

The Bigger Why

In a world that often feels divided, distracted, and loud, these gatherings offer something increasingly rare: a place to slow down and connect through something real.

If you’re in the Seattle area, come check out Mosaic MI Facebook. And if you’re not, maybe this is a nudge to find a similar space near you—or start one.

We’re not meant to go it alone. Music reminds us of that.
