Last Horse in America — Out Now
Sometimes… 3 takes is all you need
Some songs take years. This one took thirty minutes to write but a lot of effort to get recorded and produced.
I was fumbling around on guitar, found a patch in Logic that felt right, and something just opened up. I was so excited about it that I booked studio time the following week to record vocals with Jeff Fielder, an amazing Seattle-based guitarist who has worked with Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray, and Sera Cahoone, among others. It was our first time working together, and I didn't want to lose the feeling.
Three takes. We mostly used the first two. I tried to go back later and do it again, cleaner, more controlled, and every take felt like a lie compared to those first ones. So we kept the raw ones.
It took about a year to mix and finish the song, and I'm proud of all the work that went into it. Jeff built a world around those vocals: guitar, mellotron, bass, and a vibe I can't fully name but can always feel. I sang lead and background vocals. Additional mixing by Gary Thompson, mastering by Ed Brooks in Seattle. Huge thanks to all three of them for making it sound so lovely.
As for what the song is about, I'm going to leave that to you. I have my version. You'll have yours. That's the part I care about most.
